Abandonment and permanency in higher education: An application of Founded Theory
Abstract
Academic abandonment being a great problem for education systems, and for the society in general, the purpose of this study is to understand pedagogic factors which impact abandonment and permanency of students of Industrial Engineering Program at Francisco de Paula University – UFPS. Theoretically founded on the Student Integration Model Tinto. It is a comprehensive research, and uses the Founded Theory as a support (Strauss & Corbin, 2006). Results show motivation as the fundamental factor which promotes academic and social integration of the student, which ends in adaptation to the university life. This motivation process is promoted by relationships established by the student with his circle of friends, and it is directly influenced by pedagogic actions developed by teachers, the program, and the university.Downloads
