Abstract

The political theory of liberalism synthesized in doctrine more than four centuries of practice through which the so-called liberal professions associated with the bourgeois mentality - according to the famous essay by José Luis Romero - had transformed the world. However, this theory, as varied and colorful as the world it describes, enjoys a legion of admirers only comparable to that of its detractors. Thus, on the one hand, their contributions in the development of human rights, critical-scientific thinking, economic development and institutional cooperation, as well as in the promotion of an anti-absolutist democratic political culture and an organized civil society are widely recognized. ; while on the other hand, it has been held responsible for some of the most serious crises in terms of economic policy, poverty and inequality promoted by some of the multilateral agencies classified as "neoliberal." His analyzes of the relationships between public and private freedom or between intervention and deregulation, for example, have assertively contributed to the development of general political theory.
