Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence

Sophia follows COPE guidance on the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools in scholarly publishing. This policy applies to authorship, peer review and editing.

Authorship: GenAI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors, because they cannot take responsibility for the work, declare conflicts of interest or manage rights. Authors must declare in the manuscript any use of GenAI in the research or in the writing, stating the tool, its version, the purpose and the section of the text where it was used. Basic spelling or grammar checkers need not be declared. Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy, originality and integrity of all content, including content generated or modified with GenAI.

Images and data: images, figures or data generated or modified with GenAI are not accepted, unless the use of these tools is part of the research design and is described in the methodology.

Peer review: manuscripts are confidential documents. Reviewers may not upload manuscripts, or any part of them, to GenAI systems. Any use of these tools in preparing a review report must be declared to the Editor-in-Chief.

Editing: the editorial team does not upload manuscripts to GenAI systems or delegate editorial decisions to them.

Non-compliance: undeclared use of GenAI detected during the editorial process may lead to rejection of the manuscript; if detected after publication, it is handled under the corrections and retractions policy.
